As an artist, Fred Cox creates works that show an appreciation for the Dutch masters, like Vermeer, and the Romantics, like Turner, painting pieces that explore a dreamlike realism of the landscapes he tends toward. Working with looser strokes, his technique has been perfected over the last 35 years of his professional art career, initially beginning with a small sketch that develops as he works.
What he envisions—and what he wants the viewer to see when they look at one of his paintings—is a scene that will draw a person in and express a calming, serene, peaceful mood. “A way to escape from the fast pace of life,” he says.
Cox’s work generally focuses on landscapes, mountains, seascapes and various other sites that he encounters on his many travels, including during a recent trip to Cornwall, England, and the Italian landscapes for which he holds a deep passion. In addition to his painting, Cox is trained in fine decorative arts and specializes in classical European techniques, having studied the art of murals and trompe l’oeil under master artisans in France, Italy and the United States. He is a member of The Portrait Society of America, the Portrait Society of Atlanta and SALON, an international decorative artist and painters’ group.
