Stardust Solar Energy is reshaping how Atlanta powers the future

WITH ENERGY PRICES SOARING, HOMEOWNERS HAVE INCREASINGLY embraced solar as a clean, renewable and cost-effective option. It’s a wise choice, economically and ecologically—but also for reasons that are more far-reaching. Aging infrastructure and rising demand have placed growing pressure on the electrical grid, and that burden has only been intensified by the high energy needs of data centers and expanding development, raising concerns about long-term reliability and capacity. By generating power closer to where it’s consumed, solar helps reduce grid demand while improving resilience and long-term energy stability.

Companies like Stardust Solar Energy, a nationwide network of individually owned solar panel franchises, are meeting the growing demand for renewable energy solutions through a wide range of systems tailored to the needs of each client. Presenting an ideal resource for larger cities, solar has gained a strong presence in rapidly growing markets like Atlanta. “This area is growth-oriented, innovative and infrastructure-focused,” says Merceda Perry, who co-owns the Atlanta-based arm of Stardust Solar with his wife, Tiffini. “Renewable energy fits naturally into that identity because the region is facing a rising power demand, EV adoption and increasing data center expansion. The conversation over solar energy has changed over the last five years, according to Perry. “People are talking much more seriously about grid reliability, utility inflation, battery backup, EV charging and energy independence,” he says. “Five years ago, most conversations focused mainly on environmental benefits. Today, economics and resiliency are driving much of the discussion.”

But even those discussions vary from generation to generation: The Perrys have noted that their younger customers generally focus on sustainability, technology and EV integration. Older homeowners, by contrast, often concentrate on reliability, energy independence and the savings they’ll see over time. Regardless of age, the common thread is the growing interest in controlling energy costs and creating power resiliency.

Interestingly, solar continues to attract support across political divides—even when motivations differ. “Sustainability, energy independence, cost savings or resiliency are all driving factors, but what is important to note is that they often end up valuing the same outcomes: lower bills and more control over their energy,” Perry says.

The need for control over energy becomes even more critical as technology increases—technology that includes AI, cloud computing, EV adoption and data center growth. Together, these trends are driving forecasts of a sharply increased electricity demand. In fact, as Perry points out, industry projections suggest that energy consumption from U.S. data centers alone could more than double by 2030. As a result, there has been an increased focus on distributed energy generation and battery storage.

Battery storage is key to power distribution, as this allows control over when and how stored electricity is used. Systems like Tesla Powerwall, a rechargeable home battery that stores excess energy for use during the evening or in the event of outages, don’t simply generate energy—they manage it intelligently.

As the Perrys see it, the future is moving toward a reality where solar and other renewable energy systems will be considered standard rather than alternative. “Homes will increasingly function like intelligent energy hubs—producing, storing and managing electricity automatically,” Perry explains. “Solar, storage, EV charging and smart optimization technologies will feel much more integrated into everyday life and standard home construction. The International Energy Agency projects global solar investment to exceed approximately $450 billion annually, while solar PV is expected to add more than 600 GW of new generating capacity per year before 2030, making it one of the fastest-growing infrastructure sectors in the world.”

Homeowners, he explains, will increasingly consider energy systems much like internet connectivity or smart home technology—less as upgrades and more as expected infrastructure.

Unlike earlier generations of the technology, modern solar systems are designed to operate for decades and increasingly function as long-term infrastructure investments. Most Stardust Solar installations include 25-year panel performance warranties, and modern inverters and battery systems are continuously and rapidly improving their capabilities and lifespan. In terms of value, Perry believes that the focus should lie on lifetime energy savings and long-term energy stability.

“Beyond energy savings, many homeowners view solar as an investment in their property,” says Erica Bearss, vice president of corporate communications at Stardust Solar. She goes on to cite a Zillow study showing that homes with solar energy sold for an average of 4.1% more than comparable homes without solar, alongside findings from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory showing that buyers were willing to pay a premium for solar-equipped homes. As Bearss explains, “The combination of energy savings, resiliency and potential property value appreciation creates a compelling case for many families.”

Still, cost remains one of the most common questions for prospective customers. To address that concern, Stardust Solar emphasizes financing options, tax credits, incentives and long-term savings. Additionally, there is the fact that utility costs historically trend upward over time, which only serves to improve the economics of going solar. “Educating and supporting our customers throughout the process is an important part of what we do,” Perry says. “As we’ve seen, the financial motivation for going solar has become much stronger, but that scale is only tipped when people understand how the benefits outweigh the cost. There are usually three things that influence the decision to switch to solar: rising electricity bills, a clear long-term financial case and confidence in the installer. Once people understand the economics, incentives, warranties and reliability benefits, the conversation changes quickly.”

Facts weigh heavily in the decision, but confidence in the installer who is providing those facts is also key. “Our headquarters at Stardust Solar Energy has trained more than 3,000 renewable energy professionals and operates one of the largest solar training and workforce development platforms in Canada,” Perry says. “Education builds trust, improves adoption and helps customers make informed long-term decisions. We see training as a major part of scaling the clean energy transition because people make better decisions when they understand the technology.
